Saltwater Freshwater Festival

This was a bit of an epic day. The Saltwater Freshwater Festival is an event which celebrates our indigenous culture. Celebrated on Australia Day, the festival highlights Indigenous culture in a way that is both fun and informative. This years event was held in the Kempsey Showgrounds and I seriously had a blast.

The colour and dance and music, the stories told by the women Elders in the story tent, the weaving and canoe making – it was absolutely the best way I could have celebrated a day that I think has been far too taken over by a narrow view of what it means to be Australian. Saltwater Freshwater, by bringing many cultures together and celebrating togetherness, is a far better way to show the world this is what we want for our country than the typical Aussie flag and BBQ.
